In the XII th century a castle was built on the hill above Týn. It was completely destroyed by numerous attacks of the enemies. Today we can see on its place a roman stone bridge. In the XIII th century a wooden bridge was built on the ford, the first in the South of Bohemia, and Týn became an ideal location for the transfer of salt which was brought to the town on the "Golden way" from the Alp countries. The surrounding area remained the centre of rafting till half of XIX th century. Týn nad Vltavou has also a vibrant cultural life. The municipal museum with expositions of puppets and moldavites is located at the main square, as well as Municipal Gallery Art Club. The gallery won its prestige as one of the best in the Czech Republic thanks to exhibitions of top Czech artists. The locally organized South Bohemian Music Festival regularly hosts top Czech and foreign performers. In the summer the theatre amateur group Vltavan performs on a refolving stage under the open sky. This facility together with a theatre in the Český Krumlov Castle´s park are unique in the Central Europe. Thanks to its location, Týn is one of country's favourite leisure resorts for boating and tourism. Two dams, Orlická and Hněvkovická, that have been built nearby provide a paradise of entertainment for fishermen and all forms of inland water sports.
